A woman who has lost breast volume but doesn’t necessarily want to change the size of her breasts may want to think about a breast lift (mastopexy). This procedure can help to raise and firm breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the breast tissue.
Women considering a breast lift have likely lost breast volume due to: pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuation, age and/or heredity.
Who is a Good Candidate?
You are a good candidate for a breast lift if:
- You are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight
- You don’t smoke
- You have realistic expectations
- You feel that your breasts sag, or have lost shape or volume
- When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease
- Your nipples and areolas point downward
- One breast is lower than the other
The Breast Lift Procedure
During the breast lift procedure, excess breast tissue will be removed, and the nipple and areola will be relocated to a higher position. During the procedure, different incision patterns can be used. These include:
The “Anchor” Incision: This incision is created around the edge of the areola, down the breast crease, and horizontally across the breast crease. This technique is best for women who are experiencing a large degree of sagging.
The “Lollipop” Incision: The lollipop incision is made around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease. This technique is commonly used for women with a moderate degree of breast sagging who do not wish to receive breast implants.
The “Donut” Incision: The donut incision is made around the areola only, and is done for women with a mild to moderate degree of sagging.
Breast Lift Results
The results of a breast lift can be visible immediately, and improve over time as long as a woman keeps a healthy lifestyle and maintains her weight. Following surgery, patients will be required to wear compression garments to help control any swelling. Bruising, numbness, sensitivity, and itching around the incision sites are common side effects, which should resolve within two weeks. Dr. Dodde will provide you with specific recovery instructions to help you through a safe and quick recovery.
