RealSelf Q&A with Dr. Dodde – Breast Augmentation

Patient’s Question:
Signs of Capsular Contracture After Breast Augmentation? My breast implants are now 10 years old and stick out more. They feel somewhat harder, but is this the implant or capsular contracture? How does a doctor determine if a patient has this problem?

Dr. Dodde’s Answer:
Any change in the shape and especially the feel of the breasts should be brought to the attention of a plastic surgeon. Capsular contracture can occur at any time but typically present themselves after several years. If the breasts feel hard or are painful, become more round in appearance are different shapes or sit higher on the chest; it is a good bet that what you are experiencing is a capsular contracture. An experienced plastic surgeon would be able to identify a capsular contracture on examination alone and recommend an individual treatment plan appropriate for you.
