Keeping Your Skin Healthy This Summer

As cold and cloudy weather starts to vanish, it’s important to step up your skincare game and make sure your skin stays clear and healthy. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the world, with one in five Americans developing skin cancer by the age of 70. Despite being so common, it’s also one of the most easily preventable types of cancer. Here are some easy ways to protect yourself this summer while you get back outside.

SPF, Always

As many high-altitude skiers will testify, you’re always in danger of UV exposure when you’re outside. Even if it’s cloudy, be sure to include some SPF in your daily skincare regimen. This is one of the easiest, most effective ways to ensure you’re always protected— and it’s been shown to be one of the easiest, most effective ways to combat signs of aging that can be augmented by UV exposure. Things like wrinkles, pigmentation, and texture can be difficult to get rid of later on and may be cause for a costly procedure. Try switching your moisturizer to one that contains a full-spectrum SPF of 30 or higher in order to get multiple benefits at once.

Cover Up

Although it might be tempting to show off that beach body you’ve been working on, covering yourself against sunlight is a highly-effective way to prevent UV damage. Long sleeves and pants, as well as a large, wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses can further protect you from sun damage, along with SPF protection. This is because clothing is very effective at blocking or absorbing UV rays— especially white or light-colored clothing that has a tighter weave, as these things will prevent penetration or absorption.

Self-Exams

Skin cancer is even more preventable when it’s caught early.
