Nose Surgery for More than Just Aesthetics

Rhinoplasty and Septoplasty are often confused with one another, but both involve surgery on the nose and can actually be performed together. The biggest difference between these procedures is the reason they are performed. Many women understand that nose surgery can be used to improve appearance, but it can do much more than that!

Rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty is perhaps the most common type of nose surgery referred to. With a rhinoplasty, you can enhance the appearance of your nose for more balanced facial features. You might be a candidate for a rhinoplasty if you experience a nose that is too big, a nose that is too small, an angled nose, or a nose with a hump in the bridge.

Septoplasty

A septoplasty is used when you are experiencing functional issues with the nose due to a deviated septum or another structural issue. A deviated septum refers to a septum (the cartilage that separates the nostrils) that is off center. A mildly deviated septum might go without causing any symptoms, but a more severe one can obstruct breathing. The septoplasty procedure process is much like a rhinoplasty, but is aimed at removing tissue to straighten the septum and open the airway. You might be a candidate for a septoplasty procedure if you experience breathing difficulties, chronic congestion, or frequent nosebleeds.

Septorhinoplasty

When nose surgery is requested to improve function while reshaping the nose to improve its appearance, a septorhinoplasty is performed. During this procedure, correcting a deviated septum as well as enhancing the appearance of the nose is focused on. You might be a candidate for a septorhinoplasty if you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose and experience common symptoms associated with a severely deviated septum.
