The Basics of Botox

Are you starting to notice lines and wrinkles around your eyes and forehead? If so, you are not alone. Throughout our lives, we make many, many facial expressions every day. These facial expressions cause our facial muscles to contract. Over time, these repeated contractions can lead to dynamic lines and wrinkles in the face, which stick around even when we are not making an expression. Botox treatments are meant to address these dynamic wrinkles for a more youthful and relaxed appearance. Read on to learn more about Botox and what it can do for you.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable treatment made up of botulinum toxin type A. It works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause facial muscles to contract, smoothing out lines and wrinkles in the forehead, between the eyebrows, and at the corners of the eyes.

What is Treatment Like?

Botox treatment is generally pain-free and simple. During treatment, a numbing cream can be applied to the treatment area to ensure your comfort. Then, a small, thin syringe is used to carefully inject the Botox into the targeted areas. This process usually only takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.

Is there Downtime?

There is no downtime required following Botox injections. Patients should avoid massaging or touching the treatment area afterward, as this could accidentally cause the Botox to spread to unintended areas. BE sure to avoid strenuous or vigorous actives for the rest of the day after your treatment. Results can last from 3-6 months before a touch-up treatment is needed.
